A New England town’s surprising connections to the Confederacy

A book that was published this year is revealing Newburyport’s surprising connections to the Confederacy. While Newburyport is known for being the hometown of abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, the new book, entitled “Newburyport and the Civil War” tells the story of a Newburyporter who served as a general for the Confederacy after mastering several Native American languages (he lead the Native Americans against the Union army), and of Newburyport’s first mayor who almost ran against Lincoln for president.
Newburyport author William Hallett, who did much of his research in the archives of Newburyport’s Public Library, is giving book talks in Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts throughout the summer and the fall. More information here:
